Paralegal Responsibilities: Responsible for directly and independently supporting one of more program areas by providing a wide variety of litigation, administrative and data entry functions. Work requires knowledge of office skills, personal computers, scanners, copy and fax machines, and an ability to work as a team member and facilitate work processes among other staff members. Performs the following tasks while complying with established procedures: Reviews investigative reports, testimonies, interviews, files, and documents for a variety of civil and/or criminal cases to become familiar with the issues, identify pertinent material, and prepare comprehensive digests. Researches and summarizes factual aspects of cases. Reads and analyzes reports of investigating agencies and sorts through and reads subpoenaed documents and identifies and summaries portions that may be relevant to particular cases. Establishes and maintains an effective system of compiling, indexing, and organizing this information and its sources. Participates and assists in preparation for trial by compiling, organizing, and indexing various evidentiary exhibits. Marks and identifies trial exhibits and drafts a list of exhibits to be offered at trial. Prepares narrative summaries, charts, tables, graphs, or other visual aids to be used at trial. Performs legal research on particular issues and cases identified by the attorney(s); researches cases, law, statutes, regulations, court rules, policies, procedures, legal periodicals, and other legal authorities that are relevant to the particular issue. Organizes these source materials by providing summaries, bibliographies, and indices for use in litigation. Utilizes a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case- or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings, e.g. electronic discovery. Assists in the preparation of government and expert witnesses for trial. Prepares drafts on a variety of legal documents (pleadings, memoranda of law, trial briefs, summonses, complaints, indictments, answers, motion papers, stipulations) to be used in preparation of the final draft and then shepardizes, proofreads, and verifies citations and statutory references against original sources such as legal texts, reports. Maintains liaison with client agencies to keep them informed about the litigation and to seek their assistance to resolve particular legal or factual problems.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Paralegal Certificate. 1 year of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful. Automated litigation support experience valued. Ability to obtain and or maintain a government issued public trust. Some infrequent travel may be needed for trial support in various court locations through the district. Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research. Excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources. Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
