Paralegal The candidate will work under supervision of the General Counsel. Responsible for providing assistance to the Office of General Counsel in handling administrative and business matters and performing related work as required; composing and preparing legal documents of a confidential nature concerning internal organization matters; providing legal secretarial/administrative support to General Counsel and/or other executive staff as requested. This position is distinguished by the responsibility to provide assistance at both a substantive as well as administrative level to an in-house legal department. Will be privy to highly confidential and sensitive information on internal District matters pertaining to the decision-making process on matters relating to potential and current litigation, labor relations and/or personnel and employment, and other items of general legal and/or liability concerns. Serves at the pleasure of the Executive Director. Reports to the General Counsel. Organizes and prepares legal documents, reports, exhibits, agenda, and other related information for production, distribution, and presentation to the Board of Directors, client departments, opposing parties, and/or the public during Board meetings and legal proceedings. Reconciles and summarizes investigations, pleadings, and motions. Inputs information and maintains files in organization’s case management database; including setting up/maintaining files, records, and indexes. Interviews witnesses, organization officials, and employees as requested. Prepares and/or reviews responses to California Public Records Act requests. Confirm completeness, accuracy and check for applicable exemptions. Coordinate with Risk and Insurance Management Specialist and/or other staff as needed. Drafts interrogatories, basic pleadings and motions, and written discovery and responses for review by the General Counsel. Assists in preparing or responding to subpoenas and filing documents in the proper court system. Researches and compiles facts and documents, historical and personnel data, and records of deliberations and decisions by the Board of Directors pertaining to issues or cases. Reviews and summarizes legal opinions, legal inquiries, briefs, and court rulings. Checks citations and quotations for accuracy, using legal references. Screens phone calls and provides responsive, authoritative information to departmental representatives, opposing counsel, and outside agencies, as requested in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner. Maintains appointment calendars for General Counsel, and schedules meetings and conference calls. Screens and distributes mail for General Counsel. Assists General Counsel and other executive staff in performing other minor business or administrative functions relieving General Counsel of clerical work and details. Maintains and updates General Counsel’s legal reference guides and court rules. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have High school diploma or GED required along with: Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies or Paralegal Certificate from American Bar Association accredited program. 5+ years of prior directly relevant professional experience required. A combination of experience/skills and education to fulfill the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be considered. Must be familiar with methods and techniques of legal research, legal principles, processes and practices, legal terminology, forms of actions, and procedures. Working knowledge of Federal and State codes, laws, statutes, court systems, and procedures is required. Should have knowledge of current technology and trends in the profession. Must have demonstrated above-average proficiency in computer software programs, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems plus.
