Profile

Legal Assistant Candidate will employ knowledge of company and legal procedures, principles of insurance law which requires the ability to work independently while assisting attorneys in the legal process necessary for the ongoing conduct of auto club group's business. Reviews, analyzes and summarizes issues involved in incoming litigation and administrative action. Determines need for file documentation, obtains proofs, clarifies facts and issues. Organizes, assembles and interprets records and documents. Researches legal issues and medical facts. Prepares briefs, motions, pleadings; mediation and arbitration summaries; legal opinions, corporate documents; depositions, medical and file summaries; exhibits, correspondence and memoranda. Acts as a general litigation assistant during court proceedings. Prepares trial books, contacts and prepares witnesses for appearance at trials, assembles evidence and performs various other tasks related to court proceedings. Assists in coordinating the defense of actions brought in small claims court. Participates in all phases of the settlement process including evaluations, recommendations and negotiations. Originates and maintains research index systems, brief banks, expert witness files and inter-departmental statistics. Reports developments in legislation and case law to legal staff and assists in preparation of a legal periodical for distribution to claims. Attends special legislative or judicial proceedings as required. Attends in-house educational seminars with attorneys. Participates in outside continuing legal education seminars. Reviews and summarizes complex court decisions and legislative developments impacting legal and claim procedures. Assembles data and provides input for implementation of computerized research and litigation monitoring systems. Manages law library. Reviews and recommends publications for acquisition and maintains library budget. Acts as a resource person to all level of company personnel regarding complex corporate legal matters and departmental procedures.

Qualification and Experience

Candidate should have Associates Degree as a Legal Assistant or completion of an ABA approved Legal Assistant training program. Bachelor's degree is preferred. Knowledge of principles, methods and resources involved in legal research; civil litigation procedure; federal and state judicial systems; legal research; claim procedures; principles of insurance; diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of medical conditions and trauma; medical terminology; No Fault Law; policy construction and interpretation; and insurance products and services is required. Extensive paralegal experience is preferred. Knowledge of company procedures and departmental functions is desired.
