Senior Manager Legal Support The candidate will be responsible for the development and efficient utilization of legal support resources available within the Law Department including staff -- Paralegals across all practice areas, Project Assistants, eDiscovery Analysts and Administrative/Executive Assistant -- responsibility for electronic systems and platform support for the Law department and its constituent functions and project management initiatives for functions within the Law Department. Will develop, establish and maintain project management procedures and is responsible for developing project scopes, defining project guidelines and requirements, development of plans and schedules and coordinating the resources necessary to successfully complete projects. Will be responsible for coordinating and promoting the use of technology, including and implementing cost effective legal technology solutions to support transactions, litigation and electronic discovery (eDiscovery) efforts and technological tools and systems to efficiently and cost-effectively facilitate Law department processes and productivity. Liaison between the company’s Information Technology Department and the Law Department, leading all related capital projects. Manage support in all phases of litigation matters, including: assisting either company’s attorneys or outside counsel with case investigation, witness interviews, gathering relevant information and documents, preparing discovery responses, drafting and/or reviewing and editing pre-trial pleadings and documents, preparing factual arguments for summary judgment motions, participating in deposition preparation, litigation hold notices, and trial preparation. Oversees and collaborates with supervisor of corporate paralegals to provide the corporate transaction attorneys high levels of legal support. (i.e. bankruptcy, lobbying activities, real estate, procurement, finance). Oversees and collaborates with supervisor of litigation paralegals to provide the litigation attorneys high levels of legal support. (i.e. general litigation, labor and employment, tort litigation). Collaborate with staff to develop and implement legal hold and preservation protocols for each legal practice area to minimize disruption to employee clients while meeting legal obligations. In addition, help manage annual spend associated with outside vendors by conducting eDiscovery searches in-house. Apply sound project management and legal project management principles and processes to the planning, budgeting and executing of projects. Serves as department’s project management expert to promote productivity and work flow efficiencies within the Law group. Maintains case management system and develops reports as required. Responsible for ensuring all non-legal representations and advocacy of other company’s departments are compliant with the rules of the specific jurisdiction. Collaborate with attorneys and professional staff to identify resources and necessary staffing and matter management plans; directly supervises General Law Administrative Assistants and Executive Assistants. Lead all IT capital projects within the Law Department and work with the company’s internal audit function and IT on data analytics for Law Department. Develop and implement enterprise strategies for the company’s national electronic discovery program. Ensure the company’s is in compliance with rapidly evolving federal and state rules governing electronic discovery. Negotiate and manage agreements including complex contracts with copying vendors, legal research and eDiscovery vendors.

Qualification and Experience

Demonstrated paralegal management experience required. Experience/familiarity with personnel policies, labor agreements, discipline process in a railroad operation. Certification in PMP, Lean and/or Six Sigma. Experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate law department required as well as direct supervisory experience of paralegals. Prior experience identifying and implementing technology solutions to enhance efficiencies and productivity in a law firm or in-house environment. Demonstrated experience in project management or legal project management. Strong knowledge of litigation and corporate transaction practices. Ability to identify potential legal issues. Strong interpersonal, writing and verbal communications skills. Demonstrated experience in a large law firm or corporate legal department supervising paralegals. Significant experience managing electronic document searches and implementing technology solutions designed to improve productivity within the Law Department. Understanding of IT infrastructure and technology architecture as it relates to data storage and protection. Sound knowledge of electronic discovery based on direct involvement in the planning and/or successful use of eDiscovery software and services. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Applications and document management software (e.g. Documentum), working knowledge of litigation support software/databases. Possesses suitable knowledge of the eDiscovery process.
