Profile

Instructor - Horticulture Duties: Will take a leadership role in their departments and the college, will adapt to a variety of teaching situations, can use technology to teach effectively, and will work effectively with students, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and student success. Reports to the Dean of the Business Division. Responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes to a diverse student body in a variety of formats including online and hybrid; developing curriculum; preparing teaching materials; developing and assessing student learning outcomes to evaluate student work; assigning grades; maintaining required records; and advising and consulting with students to support their success. Will be responsible for providing leadership in the Horticulture Department and will teach a variety of courses, including plant identification, soil science, pruning, pest management, and plant production with a focus on landscape management, design, construction and restoration. Participation in the following: achievement of the College's mission and goals; upholding the College's values; governance of the College via department and division work; committee assignments; required professional development and college in-service activities (including employee orientation and college compliance trainings); personal and program evaluation. May include early morning or late afternoon/evening classes and could include online teaching as well.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree plus an associate's degree, or equivalent education, in Horticulture or a related field. Successful teaching experience in Horticulture at the undergraduate level equivalent to at least one academic year. 2 years of recent work experience in the horticulture industry. Excellent speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. PREFERRED: 2 years of full-time business work experience in one or more of the instructional areas listed in the position description. Experience managing and working effectively with multiple teams of students, colleagues, college leadership and customers in a community college environment. Experience with current pedagogical techniques, active learning and student-centered learning for students of different abilities and at different levels of preparedness. Commitment to inclusivity and respect for a diverse community college environment comprised of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds. Experience in assessing effectiveness of teaching methods and curriculum/program changes on student engagement and success. Evidence of ability to use technologies, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, email, learning management systems, and evidence of ability to incorporate and assess efficacy of new technologies in work flow, instruction, assessment and daily practice. Experience teaching sustainable horticulture courses that include plant identification, soil science, pruning, pest management, and plant production with a focus on landscape management, design, construction and restoration.
