Patent Agent The candidate will prepare patent applications and responses to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent Office as assigned for firm patent matters. Will assist the intellectual property attorneys with legal matters as needed. Report directly to the Associate General Counsel and be on a legal team with 8 other professionals. Obtain initial and subsequent disclosures from inventors, obtain or develop patent drawings and prepare patent applications, prepare information disclosure statements, develop responses to Office Actions, and conduct all other necessary patent preparation and prosecution tasks for assigned U.S. and foreign patent matters. Communicate the status of patent matters to inventors, peers, and supervisors as needed and assist with the procurement of instructions from firm’s technical managers. Work with engineering staff to conduct preliminary evaluation of infringement risks from new competitor patents. Maintain current knowledge of work performed by engineering groups at firm as well as of significant historical product design and other technical information. Maintain current knowledge of developing issues in the Intellectual Property field and provide education and advice to firm management and employees. May share responsibility for supervising one or more Administrative Assistants.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree. Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office essential. Must have 2+ years of experience of preparing patent applications and preparing responses to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent Office. Experience in Medical Device industry preferred. Engineering experience desired. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs and legal searching software such as Thomson Innovation and Acclaim. Strong verbal and written communication skills essential.
