Legal Assistant The candidate will prepare for the detail Immigration Judge's docket. Will handle mail, phones, and updating the Records of Proceedings for the hearings. Prepare hearings or conferences with the Immigration Judge, as applicable. Following established guidelines, gather, prepare, summarize relevant materials for use by attorneys in preparation of opinions, briefs and other legal documents, and summarize depositions and other transcripts. Maintain case files and perform simple legal research. Index, track and control exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial. Assist attorneys in courtroom and prepare exhibit cross-references. Screen documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria. Perform initial compilation of documents for FOIA or production requests, subject to review by superiors and trial staff. Some 'day travel' may be required to nearby locations. Perform miscellaneous errands, such as carrying mail to and from the post office (without a government supplied vehicle) and sorting opening incoming and outgoing mail. Provide additional legal and administrative support functions as assigned. Should have Paralegal certificate OR 3 years of experience in legal environment. Should be proficient in MS Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).
