Legal Assistant (Office Automation) – GS-0986-05/07 The candidate as a Legal Assistant assigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA), will be responsible for performing a wide variety of complex support activities for a staff of attorneys involved in Immigration litigation and other law related activities. Specifically, will: Gather and prepare information for Immigration Court proceedings; Perform basic research by reviewing, analyzing case materials, collecting related files for cases cited; Perform a variety of support functions related to tracking and managing Immigration Court dockets, preparing motions and appeals; Research and gather data from a variety of databases to provide the most current information related to immigration cases; and Draft non-legal memoranda and correspondence based on guidance from attorneys, paralegals, or legal specialist.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have following qualifications: GS-5: Must meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-5 grade level. Experience: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level performing duties such as: Providing basic assistance in a legal office; Gathering routine information and providing assistance to individuals verbally or in writing; Locating and reviewing legal case files and/or other materials to obtain status of cases; and Preparing routine written correspondence from individuals, attorneys, and/or their representatives regarding the status of legal cases. Substitution of Education for Experience: May substitute successful completion of a Bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a Bachelor's degree for the experience required at the GS-05 grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. Combining Education and Experience: Appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience also may be used to meet the total qualification requirements for the GS-05 grade level. GS-6: Must meet the following to qualify at the GS-6 grade level: Experience: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level, performing duties such as: performing basic research by reviewing and analyzing legal case materials by locating related information from other files or cases cited; gathering data from a variety of databases to provide the most current information related to a legal case; and drafting legal memoranda, basic motions, responses, and correspondence based on guidance from attorneys or paralegals. GS-7: Must meet the following to qualify at the GS-7 grade level: Experience: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level performing duties such as: developing, organizing, and maintaining criminal file materials and files of research aids; analyzing and preparing documents for supportive evidence of a legal case; tracking and assigning legal dockets; and responding to inquiries on legal opinions, pleadings, motions, interrogatories, administrative records, and litigation reports.
