IP Foreign Patent Paralegal The candidate will be responsible for a wide range of complex and substantive duties relating to the initial phases of filing foreign patent applications, through the completion of the patent prosecution process for the firm’s clients; maintain and manage assigned foreign prosecution docket and following up on items to ensure due dates and deadlines are met. Run weekly reports to confirm due dates and deadlines are correct on the docket; Prepare documents related to highly complex and substantive phases of foreign patent prosecution, including the researching and drafting of petitions; complex claims sets; complicated name changes and/or mergers, etc.; be responsible for managing all aspects of foreign formalities associated with filing and prosecution, including securing of legalized documents, e.g. assignments, declarations, powers of attorney and certified priority documents; Engage vendors and third-party providers to secure translations, sequence listings and formal drawings.; Strictly adhere to a policy of filing responses and other documents in advance of filing deadlines; Inform docketing department and attorneys, through the firm’s WorkPortal or via email, when due dates and/or deadlines are met or extended and when initial filing phases are complete; Communicate with the client to ensure all deadlines are met; Prepare foreign cost estimates for attorneys and for inclusion with letters to clients regarding upcoming deadlines; Account for all hours worked on a daily basis by entering time into the Firm’s timekeeping system; complete and save all time entries in advance of accounting department’s deadlines; meet billable goal as established by firm management.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Paralegal Certificate of Completion of an ABA (American Bar Association) approved course of study and/or education beyond high school evidenced by completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university; preferably an advanced degree. Ability to change and adapt to current and future responsibilities and circumstances. Ability to use essential office equipment, e.g., telephone, personal computer, scanner, typewriter, calculator, fax machine and photocopier. knowledge of foreign patent prosecution as normally acquired through post-secondary education or specialized equivalent experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel, and U.S. and foreign patent office online resources. Ability to learn other computer applications with training provided necessary to the completion of tasks. Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time restraints. Demonstrates innovation and initiative in developing and recommending to management and legal staff improved procedures, processes and techniques to meet varied and complex requirements of the position, task or project. Demonstrate ability to identify issues and problems and to recommend and implement solutions. A self-assertive attitude with the knowledge and initiative to take appropriate action in the absence of legal staff. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with a diverse group of attorneys, clients and staff, providing information with courtesy and professionalism, at all times observing confidentiality requirements. Ability to work well within a team-oriented environment and contribute to effective team relationships. Maintain a high level of attention to detail and organization in all aspects of the position. Work occasionally requires more than normally scheduled work hours to perform the essential duties of the position.
