Profile

Patent Prosecution Paralegal The candidate will provide support to attorneys in aspects of patent prosecution, both foreign and domestic. Will develop and maintain knowledge of patent prosecution and the U.S. and foreign Patent Office rules/issues/trends (understands Intellectual Property laws and regulations), has basic knowledge of the docketing of U.S. and foreign prosecution deadlines, is experienced with filing via EFS-Web, and has an understanding of the concepts of privilege and confidentiality. Understands, coordinates with and assists attorneys in the preparation of filing formal prosecution documents Patent applications (Utility, Design, Plant): Provisional, Continuation, Divisional, U.S. National Phase, and PCT. Assignments, Declarations, Powers of Attorney, Formal Drawings, Information Disclosure Statements, Extensions of Time, and other documents required by various countries’ patent laws. Process Notices of Allowance and Issue Fee payments. Communicates with company attorneys and other in-house staff, interfaces with domestic and foreign patent and trademark agents and outside counsel, handles daily intake/processing of USPTO emails/papers/faxes/instructions from clients, communicates with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and its examiners, and reviews communications from patent offices and prepares drafts of responses. Assists in researching patents, trademarks, technical references, prior art, legal issues and businesses of clients by using online databases and outside agencies. Manages intellectual property records, coordinates matter management and administrative maintenance of patent and trademark portfolios. Calculates estimates of filing costs. Handles, monitors and updates the patent docket in the internal document management system (ProLaw) to track deadlines. Reviews/updates files. Records and enters time for attorneys and self.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have a strong understanding of patent procedures, and is comfortable with electronic filing. Must be able to use a high degree of analytical reasoning, be detail oriented, able to communicate effectively (written and oral), have strong computer skills, able to work on projects to completion with a minimum of input or direction, and work effectively on a variety of simultaneously active matters in a fast-paced environment.
