Legal Internship, Winter 2016 The interns will assist the office's pro bono program, which matches volunteer lawyers with unaccompanied children needing representation in immigration court. Will assist with the initial screening of unaccompanied minor children, conduct communication with child clients, adult sponsors, and other agencies, including making psycho-social and other referrals as needed. Research current trends in immigration law and family law, country conditions, and other federal laws to assist in case preparation. Update case summaries, track important court dates and deadlines, process referrals and communicate with clients. Should be enrolled in an accredited J.D. or LL.M. program. Exceptional academic credentials with strong writing skills are needed. Experience in immigration and family law strongly preferred. Experience working with children and survivors of trauma and torture an asset. Professional fluency in Spanish is a plus. Should be passionate about issues affecting unaccompanied immigrant children. Ability to commit to 12 weeks of interning preferred; commitment of 10+ weeks required. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required, though a commitment of 16-20 hours is preferred.
