Fall Legal Intern The legal interns work under the direct supervision of the executive director and full-time staff attorneys leading the three program priorities: ending racial and religious profiling, strengthening the Muslim charitable sector, and countering anti-Muslim hate. Perform legal research and write on topics, including civil rights, executive power, finance and accounting. Assist with drafting briefs, discovery requests and responses, and correspondence in connection with litigation. Work on outreach activities with Muslim charities aimed at improving their operations, increasing transparency, and ensure legal compliance with anti-terror financing laws and regulations. Prepare FOIA requests and analyze documents produced by the federal government regarding potential civil rights violations. Assist in organizing educational seminars for nonprofits. Facilitate video screenings to educate community members about their civil rights and learn about their encounters with law enforcement authorities. Conduct and summarize intake interviews with individual community members affected by profiling. Work closely with Muslim institutions, community organizations and other important stakeholders. Background in one or more of these areas: finance, accounting, tax, civil rights or a strong interest in one or more of these areas required. Must have excellent legal research and writing skills. Experience working with grass roots organizations and conducting outreach is essential. Strong computer skills - experience with Excel, Macintosh, and a background in working with databases preferred.
