Meteorology (Pathways Student – Internship), GS-1399-03/04 Duties: Performs standardized duties related to weather observations, research, methodology, and collection of data. Receives on-the-job training to acquire operational experience with National Weather Service programs, policies, and procedures. Receives training in the development of forecast products, performing a variety of studies and analysis within limited scope and complexity.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification Requirements: All applicants must be currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, on at least a half-time schedule as a student at in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs (e.g., graduate school, law school); or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a degree or certificate.

Minimum Qualifications: In addition to the above Pathways Eligibility requirement, applicants must meet the following based on the grade(s) desired:

For GS-03 Grade-level: Must have completed at least 1 academic year of post-high school study (NOTE: One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university.)

For GS-04 Grade-level: Must have completed at least 2 academic years of post-high school study or an Associate's degree.

(NOTE: two years of full-time academic study is defined as 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university.)

Applicants who have qualifying experience performed on less than a full-time basis must specify the percentage and length of time spent in performance of such duties.

Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program. Complete degree requirements.

Note: For the Meteorology, GS-1340 series, applicants must have a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: (1) at least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: (a) 6 semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics; (b) 6 semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); (c) 3 semester hours of physical meteorology; and (d) 2 semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. (2) 6 semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions. (3) 3 semester hours of ordinary differential equations. ((4) at least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

Note: There is a prerequisite or co-requisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major. Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted. Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and Perform their job successfully. Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.
