Director – Intellectual Property Duties: Overall responsibility for the identification, assessment and protection of intellectual property, while serving as a liaison with outside patent counsel and internal R&D. Develop intellectual property strategy and manage patent portfolio resulting in broad protection of water-soluble films based on polyvinyl alcohol and other materials. Design and manage internal patent databases. Manage drafting of patent applications to enable allowance of broad blocking claims. Perform prior art searching to successfully craft broad allowable patent claims. Perform technical freedom-to-operate analysis of proposed new products. Review invention disclosures and determine patent filing priorities with patent counsel. Assist in direction of pending patent prosecutions. Manage external patent watch activities.
Qualification and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, preferred. J.D. Degree, MBA, or Patent Agent registration are a plus. 5+ years' demonstrated R&D and IP portfolio management experience. Prior experience working with external patent counsel for preparation and prosecution of patent applications, both in the U.S. and abroad. Experience working with a cross-functional team to develop an R&D or IP strategy that supports a broader business strategy. Ability to build and maintain productive work relationships. A team player with strong communication skills. Demonstrated technical writing skills. Independent and energetic personality with the ability to multi-task. Ability to travel both domestically and internationally. Ability to operate in the technical, management, and commercial arenas, and thrive in a fast-paced, intrapreneurial, open-thinking, corporate environment.
