Senior Patent Counsel Duties: Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Intellectual Property Counsel, will provide strategic vision in managing the Company’s current and future intellectual property to develop and implement overall strategic directives. Will be responsible for client counseling, portfolio management, advising complex business transactions, dispute and litigation, licensing , patent drafting, prosecution and enforcement, publication review, due diligence and opinion work. Will be an integral working partner with the company's Business Units and Research and Development organizations. Responsible for managing intellectual property initiatives in strategic areas of interest, reviewing and managing the IP portfolios. Develop world-wide protection and commercialization of the Company’s intellectual property. Identify and examine potential IP opportunities and encourage the creation and protection of IP by building strong patent portfolios to ensure long-term competitive advantage. Manages and directs relationships with outside patent counsel, including patent prosecution, assessment of infringement claims in conjunction with the legal department. Support Corporate Business Development in transactional work to execute the Company’s licensing strategies.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Law degree from an ABA accredited law school, and membership in one or more state bars. Scientific degree in chemistry/biochemistry/biology or related life science; Advanced degree preferred. 8-15 years of relevant intellectual property experience, which will likely include in-depth experience at a top IP firm and/or broad senior level in house legal experience, including implementation of global functional policy /strategy; management of a complex IP portfolio, experience managing high volume intellectual property workflow, and substantive knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry. Experience with both large and small molecules, chemistry/composition, biology and methods/processes preferred. Should understand the interrelationship between the legal, scientific and business aspects of intellectual property and the use of IP to further the company’s business goals. Must be experienced in strategic intellectual property counseling, licensing, litigation management, and other complex business transactions, and in prioritizing multiple tasks under pressure. Excellent interpersonal skills, be articulate, direct and forthright, and be a collaborative and decisive team member and a strategic thinker with a broad perspective. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple matters simultaneously and to respond to rapidly shifting priorities in ambiguous or challenging situations. Excellent communication skills with scientist and non-technical colleagues; ability to consistently act as a team player. Must be comfortable and adept at balancing risk and opportunity. Experience with IP strategies including offensive and defensive patent filing approaches, filing of continuations, and patent litigation strategies. Ability to effectively communicate IP and legal information verbally or in writing so others will understand. Ability to understand detailed and technical IP and legal information presented verbally or in writing. Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to provide answers that make good business sense.
