Senior IP Attorney The candidate will be responsible for designated IP functions with a focus on portfolio development and patent prosecution. Will interact with research personnel, engineers, and managers to create, protect, and manage intellectual property rights on a global basis, including filing and prosecuting US and foreign patent applications. Become the expert in the Legal Department for specific patent portfolios. Develop, recommend and implement plans to classify, evaluate and enhance the company portfolio. Assist in the development and implementation of US and international patent procurement strategies. Assist with evaluating the IP portfolio and potential IP exposure of possible acquisitions. Evaluate portfolios of varying sizes in a variety of areas relevant to current and future company businesses. Work closely with other members of the legal department and company researchers/ engineers to identify innovations and patents that are important to company. Participate with other senior managers to establish strategic plans and objectives. Make final decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures operations effective achievement of objectives. Participate in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people. Direct and control the activities of a broad functional area through several department managers within the company. Have overall control of designated planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods. Supervise and manage patent applications in a variety of technology areas, many of which involve emerging areas of speech recognition and natural language understanding. Counsel and train other company employees on IP matters and issues. Improve IP operational processes.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have 6-8 years of experience as a patent attorney including personal preparation of original patent applications. Should have State Bar membership and eligibility to practice before the USPTO. Should preferably have experience in software patent prosecution. Knowledge of computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics or speech recognition, either through undergraduate degree or industry experience required.
