Patent Counsel The candidate will prepare, file, and prosecute U.S. patent applications to issue, and throughout the process work closely with inventors and business attorneys to develop high quality, strategic application content. Direct the filing and procurement of international patent applications for selected GE businesses. Work with business’ marketing and engineering functions and patent evaluation boards to review invention disclosures. Make patent application filing decisions that maximize the scope of world-wide patents protection consistent with the business’ strategic goals. Conduct and review patentability studies for disclosed inventions and technologies. Closely manage the quality and content of selected U.S. patent applications prepared and prosecuted by company’s preferred providers of patent services. Participate on and lead teams focused on the development and nurturing of company’s IP professionals, and GE’s tools, processes and best practices relating to the creation and management of patent and other IP rights.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics or computer science. Must have 2-5 years of experience drafting and prosecuting U.S. and global patent applications in the mechanical and/or electrical arts, or 2-5 years of engineering work experience. Experience working with management and business teams in creating effective worldwide patent portfolios aligned with business strategic objectives and goals. Experience in handling a wide variety of patent procurement matters including reviewing invention disclosures, making well-reasoned patent applications filing decisions, preparing and filing high quality patent applications, and appealing adverse patentability decisions. Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. state. Demonstrated understanding and command of U.S. patent laws and regulations, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office practices and procedures, Paris Convention rules and Patent Cooperation Treaty rules and practices.
