Senior Patent Attorney The candidate will serve as a contributing attorney supporting the Office of General Counsel generally and will specifically provide professional support, counsel, and management of matters related to intellectual property (IP) protection, deployment, and defense. Will assist other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel to address a wide variety of legal issues confronting Battelle management and staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and provide competent, professional, and thorough legal advice and services. Provide legal support for obtaining and maintaining patents, copyrights, licenses, contracts, supporting and directing litigation, and performing other legal services as needed or directed by the Manager of IP Legal Services and the General Counsel. Draft and prosecute patent applications. Provide counsel to management and staff on intellectual property matters. Advise, develop, and oversee the implementation of IP protection processes aligned with contractual requirements. Participate in IP license drafting and negotiations. Engage in litigation, administrative proceedings, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings such as arbitration and mediation. Provide strategic counsel and advice on a wide variety of topics to support technology transfer and laboratory operations. Communicate legal concepts and principles in a manner that non-lawyers will understand and act accordingly. Consistently develop and maintain productive relationships within Office of General Counsel, PNNL, DOE, colleagues at other DOE laboratories, and Battelle corporate legal staff.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited university. An undergraduate degree from an accredited university is required. Should be licensed to practice law and represent clients in the State of Washington and in current good standing with the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) or eligible to be admitted to the WSBA within 1 year after beginning employment. Must be licensed as a Patent Attorney and 5+ years of progressive professional experience practicing intellectual property law including practice as an attorney in a law firm, a corporate law office, or a government or military law office. Should have experience with litigation relating to or including intellectual property issues. In-depth knowledge of and familiarity with statutes and regulations necessary for the practice of technology transfer and commercialization consistent with U.S. Government contracting constraints is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with DOE management and operating contracts and regulations and policies applicable to DOE national laboratories is preferred.
