Staff Attorney - Department of Insurance Duties: Provides legal advice regarding insurance regulation to the Commissioner and Department of Insurance. Responsible for performing legal analysis of issues for all divisions of the Department. The staff attorney reports directly to the general counsel. Research and analyze legal issues to advise the Department on compliance with Title 27 (Insurance statutes) of the Indiana Code; Review financial transaction approval requests submitted by insurance companies for compliance with insurance law and make recommendations for future action, if necessary; Serve as the final reviewer for insurance holding company filings of material transactions for domestic companies required to be reviewed by the IDOI per IC 27-1-23; Serve as primary internal counsel for the Financial Division; Provide legal advice regarding company supervisions, rehabilitiations, and insolvencies; Respond to questions from other state agencies, legislative services agency, the public and the insurance industry regarding Indiana insurance laws, regulations and bulletins; Speak to consumer and industry groups about insurance issues; and Complete projects as assigned by the general counsel, deputy general counsel, and chief of staff.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Graduate degree in law and admission to Indiana State Bar; Experience in the legal field; Ability to interpret and apply state and federal laws, rules, and regulations ; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Organizational ability to formulate and carry out case litigation’s and initiate policies; Presentational skills with ability to persuade; Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply all requirements established by governing bodies; Ability to research and evaluate legal precedents; Participation in continuing legal education programs; Ability to apply legal principles; Ability to analyze complex problems and make sound resolutions of problems; Ability to tactfully communicate with a wide variety of administrators and involved officials to resolve disputed problems; Basic keyboarding skills and experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
