House Counsel Managing Attorney Duties: Reporting to the Director of Claims Legal, the Managing Attorney has primary responsibility for managing and overseeing the company’s House Counsel office which handles litigation for both New York and New Jersey. Personnel and performance management, salary planning and administration; training and development; and workflow and organizational planning. Management must occur with high ethical standards and excellent client service, consistent with Litigation Philosophy and Litigation Management Guidelines. Is accountable for the quality of legal services to clients and claims customers. Supervises attorneys and other staff. Has authority to make basic to complex independent decisions and recommendations on all matters which may arise within the context of litigation handling. Trains, develops and provides technical guidance to attorneys, staff and Claims personnel. Facilitates active and ongoing formal and informal communication with key Claims customers, including claims management, regarding the identification of claims handling trends and issues. Monitors utilization of the office system software and reports on key metrics to ensure desired objectives are obtained. From time to time, may personally handle assigned litigated matters through to disposition, or may assist other attorneys in the office with handling of their assigned matters.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: JD Degree from an accredited US law school. Active licenses to practice law in both New Jersey and New York or the ability to quickly obtain a license to practice law in New York. 15+ years of insurance defense litigation experience in a law firm or house counsel office focusing on personal lines insurance is required; automobile liability claims experience is preferred. Homeowners and no-fault experience is a plus. Experience through all phases of litigation including extensive first chair jury trial experience, through verdict. Knowledge and experience conducting discovery, fact and expert witness depositions, motion, trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts. Knowledge of litigation, arbitration and trial strategies and tactics. Knowledge of complex medical issues, particularly orthopedic and neurological. Understanding of etiology, causation and treatment of injuries consistent with motor vehicle accidents. Must have strong administrative skills and interpersonal management skills. A high degree of analytical and critical thinking skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail. Strong leadership, team building and customer relationship skills, including the ability to assimilate complex legal matters and provide concise, practical advice to non-lawyers. Requires a high degree of initiative, mature judgment, and discretion. Ability to resolve conflicts and empathize with clients. Negotiation skills are critical for resolving litigation. Organization and time management skills are critical for this position. Solid understanding of insurance law. Demonstrates the ability to find answers to more complex issues with insurance law and is a source of direction/assistance for staff attorneys. Proficiency with Westlaw and Microsoft Office software.
