Senior Staff Legal Attorney The candidate will offer legal expertise in trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts, with extensive experience in complex litigation, including: employment law, ADA matters, products liability, construction litigation, negligent security, trucking and other commercial motor vehicle torts, agent and broker malpractice, and professional liability (medical, legal, accountant, insurance agents and engineers). Should have extensive experience in the liability area to add to the law office's capabilities. and will perform some of the more complex work within the office. In addition to courtroom experience, must be able to engage in the practice of law, at all times in compliance with the ethical standards as established by the national/local area of practice. Perform duties encompassing all aspects of insurance defense, including initial investigation and legal analysis and advice, preparing and filing legal pleadings and documents, performing legal research, preparing for and conducting pre-trial discovery, preparing for and aggressively handling hearings and trials, and conducting post-trial activities where appropriate. Will be viewed as a senior resource within Staff Legal and recognized as technical consultant and advisor both within and outside the company. Assists in providing technical guidance to lower level attorneys and claims. The ability to work independently and without substantial supervision is valued. Should have Juris Doctorate degree in good standing. Must be active member of the Kansas and Missouri state Bars required. Should have 10 years of Liability insurance defense experience. Must have liability experience to include first chair insurance defense courtroom litigation. Demonstrates effective negotiating skills are preferred. Should understands and follows claims handling guidelines for each business unit. Must be well organized with good analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, proactive approach to file handling and caseloads, and able to work independently as well as within a team environment. Should be PC literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, Lotus Notes, and significant knowledge of Lexis or Westlaw.
