Senior Attorney, Quality & Customer Operations Duties: Provide counsel to all areas of the business on legal, compliance and quality matters that impact the company’s customers and create exposure for the organization. Will be expected to interact and advise business clients at all levels of the company and work independently and with a sense of urgency to resolve issues in a manner that’s favorable for customers and extinguishes exposure to the company. Delivering the highest quality, most efficient, and timely work product to a wide variety of business clients on complex legal and business issues touching multiple areas of the law. Counseling internal clients in a fast-paced legal environment and handling and appropriately prioritizing competing demands; moving from issue to issue quickly while devoting the necessary amount of time to provide the highest quality legal advice possible; making independent decisions based on limited or vague information, at times. Proactively identifying areas of legal exposure, understanding the severity of the exposure and working with business groups to extinguish the exposure and treat customers in a legal and fair manner. Strong legal research (statutory, regulatory and case law) and analysis skills on a wide variety of insurance-related issues; exceptional writing skills, including the ability to assimilate complex legal analysis into lay terms and provide direction to business clients in a succinct but thorough manner. Understanding Progressive’s business and working with business partners to meet their needs when legal issues are identified and guiding them to take action that will remedy negative and non-compliant customer treatment. Working within databases and SharePoint sites and helping drive continuous process improvements to deliver legal counsel in the most efficient and effective manner possible. Working with a corporate paralegal staff and assisting in the direction and review of their work.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree from an accredited law school. Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state (and be able and willing upon hire to obtain admission to the Ohio Bar as either an Active or Corporate status attorney). 2+ years of legal experience. Prior compliance and insurance experience is preferred. Ability to make decisions and solve problems independently, even when information is limited or vague. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify and effectively communicate complex legal issues to business line stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively, advocate appropriately in team settings, and influence and persuade team members and business partners at all levels tactfully and effectively. Persuasive negotiating skills and strong presentation skills. Strong planning, prioritizing and organizing skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple issues simultaneously, and recognize legal, compliance, and litigation exposures and prioritize appropriately. Excellent legal research skills, including familiarity with Westlaw or other computer-aided research tools. Exemplary work ethic. Prior compliance and insurance experience is preferred.
