Profile

Counsel The candidate will be responsible for providing high quality and cost-effective legal advice to business units that sell property-casualty products and services to commercial lines customers. Must demonstrate superior knowledge and expertise in legal, regulatory, compliance, credit, and other business issues relating to the underwriting, pricing, marketing, sale, collateralization and state or federal regulation of insurance transactions. Working under the supervision of an Associate Group General Counsel, will advise clients; draft and negotiate legally enforceable insurance and insurance-related contracts; provide timely and accurate legal analysis of relevant court decisions, statutes, and regulations; assist with the development and marketing of new products or services; advise clients on the legal and regulatory aspects of credit risks and collateral agreements; and, depending on experience, may advise and assist in the development of contracts and communications with agents and brokers. In addition, advise clients regarding regulatory inquiries regarding insurance department filings, policyholder or insurance department complaints or questions and market conduct exams or investigations. Will be responsible for analyzing and advising clients on relevant laws in all states. Learn and understand Business Insurance clients, plans and objectives, and assist them in meeting them. Seek opportunities to become involved in special projects and on committees. Build and maintain superior internal and external client relationships. Complete all required administrative tasks appropriate to performance of job duties. When requested, advise Government Relations team and clients on new legislative, regulatory, or judicial developments. Make effective use of technology and automation in the practice of law. Adhere to all standards of excellence in matter management.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have J.D. degree and a strong academic record at an accredited law school. Successful completion of the Bar and ethics examinations in the state(s) in which representation is required. Must have active license to practice law. Should have 3 years of legal experience; Insurance regulatory experience a plus. Working knowledge of Uniform Commercial Code, bankruptcy law, loss sensitive insurance programs, collateral instruments and reinsurance a plus. Should have demonstrated track record of contract negotiation and drafting skills. Must have articulate presentation skills using technology. Should have strong and persuasive legal writing skills and oral advocacy skills. Must have ability to articulate position clearly and succinctly to business clients, legal and government relations colleagues and to external parties such as insureds, agents, brokers and insurance department regulators. Should have ability to effectively understand and utilize technology and automation resources, including to online legal research resources, Microsoft Office Products, Voice Recognition Technology, and other law office management programs.
