Immigration Lawyer Duties: To assist individuals and families, who would not otherwise be able to afford such services, with immigration and naturalization problems and with problems related to their legal status in the United States, including representation in U.S. Federal District Courts and Federal Court of Appeals. Interviews clients to determine whether their problems are related to immigration. Assists clients in identification of documents required (dependent upon immigration action required) and helps clients plan to obtain them. Refers clients to other Immigration services providers, attorneys or voluntary agencies, when warranted due to the inability of CSS' Immigration Services to provide appropriate assistance. Identifies clients' non-immigration needs and makes appropriate referrals within CSS or other appropriate social service agencies. Provides information to, and accepts referrals from, other CSS services. Provides assistance with family-based immigration visas, extension of non-immigrant visas, naturalization, and asylum petitions. Provides relief from deportation through such means as withholding of removal, cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, waiver of excludability, voluntary departure, and others. Represents clients before Immigration and Naturalization Service, Immigration Judges, and the Board of Immigration Appeals, and in Federal Courts. Provides information to general public as part of educational programs in parishes and other community locations.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Law degree; admitted to Bar in any state in United States; 0-2 years' immigration experience; fluency is desirable in at least one of the major languages of the client populations served. Knowledge of and orientation to the philosophy of the Agency as presented in Mission/Philosophy statements. Knowledge of Immigration law and INS procedures which may affect clients and their decisions about alternatives to pursue. Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with co-workers, clients, and visitors; cultural sensitivity and ability to relate well and effectively in a diverse workplace and with a diverse client population. Ability to organize, efficiently document, and routinely update information. Ability to utilize legal reference materials relevant to the clients' immigration and naturalization needs. Ability to prepare written motions, pleadings, and briefs for submission to the Board of Immigration Appeals and Federal Courts.
