Scientific Evaluation Lead-Ophthalmics Business Unit (Senior Director) Duties: Be responsible for the identification, evaluation and pursuit of assets and companies for potential in- licensing / M&A in support of Ophthalmics Business Unit strategy. Identify and evaluate in-licensing and M&A opportunities. Provide recommendations based on scientific/technical merit, market/business features, and strategic alignment of opportunities. Searching for, and identifying, new technology; a broad and current knowledge of the technical and market aspects of the field; and ongoing engagement with innovator companies. Review industry-specific information and reports; analyze technical and market data; facility with available resources. Manage and communicate with cross functional teams and lead pre-diligence efforts. Lead evaluation process of potential opportunties with internal experts including BD Transactions, Commercial Assessment, R&D / Regulatory, Program Management, New Products, Legal, Corporate Finance, Market Access, Franchise Leads including BU Leadership, and external stakeholders, including KOLs. Coordinate and participate in the development of the presentation of opportunities to governance committees for progression to due diligence and support Executive Committee and Board presentations. Attendance at major ophthalmology scientific/partnering meetings to identify opportunities, to build professional networks (with pharma companies, biotech companies, academic institutions and investor groups) and to develop / to maintain an up-to-date awareness of the latest scientific advances, the industry-wide ophthalmology pipeline and competitive product landscape. Serve as a contributing member of due diligence project teams. Prepare opportunity specific presentations / reports as required. Maintain project database. Support other projects on an as-needed basis.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: A life sciences undergraduate degree and an advanced degree (MD or PhD) are required. Evidence of strong business acumen and familiarity with business concepts required; an MBA / J.D. Degree is a plus. Demonstrated track record of success. 5+ years of commerical experience in one of these positions: Business development in pharma / biotech; Commercial Strategy with focus in ophthalmology; Strategy consulting in (bio-)pharmaceuticals with major strategy firm. Previous experience in ophthalmology is a plus. Solid understanding of the pharmaceutical market including preclinical and clinical development, regulatory and commercial.
