Staff Attorney Duties: Researches and provides legal advice for a variety of issues which may include contracts, Policy Review, Health Care Fraud and Abuse, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statues, Compliance and other healthcare regulations. Investigates adverse events that could lead to medical and or general liability claims, providing clinical expertise to staff responsible for management of patient grievances and complaints, reviews and analyzes the system-wide risk event data and makes recommendations to improve patient safety based thereon; develops and conducts risk management assessments; and supports the legal department in evaluating liability claims against The System, interfacing with defense legal counsel and assisting with discovery demands. Responsible for overseeing and monitoring the Privacy Program for University Health Care System. Functions include tracking and interpreting federal legislative and regulatory activities, developing and coordinating privacy training and education programs, establishing privacy standards throughout all University organizations including Ambulatory, Outpatient, Inpatient and Nursing Home facilities.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree from ABA accredited law school. Admitted to the Georgia State Bar or eligible and scheduled to take the Georgia Bar exam. Clinical undergraduate degree preferred. 3 years of professional work experience in a health care setting is required including planning and involvement with regulatory and legal processes. Experience managing a Privacy program and or liability claims preferred. Knowledge, skills, abilities: Ability to identify, research and interpret laws, regulations, and court decisions required. Ability to effectively communicate through presentation, verbal and written communications. Ability to review, apply law and regulations and prepare practical guidance for implementation. Proven track record in effective problem solving and demonstrated analytical ability. Ability to operate independently within designated areas of responsibility. Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with co-workers, the public, patients and physicians. Skill sets include priority setting and conflict resolution. Must have leadership skills and the ability to relate positively with diverse groups with possibly conflicting priorities.
