Senior Counsel- Environmental, Health & Safety Duties: Provide legal counsel to the full panoply of environmental and regulatory issues. Provide guidance to leadership on US and Canadian federal, state and local environmental laws including Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act. Staying abreast of legislative, regulatory and judicial developments ensuring the company remains compliant. Work from our corporate office in Houston, Texas interfacing with HSE corporate and plant personnel to proactively identify and mitigate potential liability. Provides expertise and advice on a variety of issues including: Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act; Provides advice regarding regulatory compliance; Represents the Company in administrative enforcement actions; Experience in M&A transactions and related due diligence; Knowledgeable of environmental permitting matters; Firsthand experience with environmental remediation; Advises regarding the corporate audit program; Advises on contracts, policies and procedures and advises leadership on proposed changes. Responds to administrative charges/complaints/investigations before federal and state agencies and represents the company in administrative hearings.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: JD Degree and licensed, as a member in good standing, to practice law in Texas, or otherwise eligible to practice as an in-house corporate attorney. Strong academic credentials from a top-rated accredited law school. 10+ years of experience, preferably with major law firm and/or in-house corporate experience in the chemical, refining, or manufacturing sectors. Strong business acumen with an ability to balance legal and business requirements. Strong writing and verbal skills. Ability to read and interpret complex regulations.
