Senior Staff Counsel - Environmental, Health and Safety Duties: Provide legal advice and counsel regarding the Clean Air Act (Title II) and California Health and Safety vehicle emissions laws, and similar environmental laws outside the U.S., to the wide variety of departments that develop, engineer, test and launch our vehicles and products, including Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance, Engineering, Powertrain, Materials Engineering, and Sales and Marketing. Work with U.S. and global vehicle regulatory subject matter experts, including in vehicle emissions certification, onboard diagnostics, fuels and lubes, engine calibration, tailpipe emissions, and fuel economy and greenhouse gas engineers and management. Handle litigation and compliance enforcement, including interacting with federal and state environmental agencies. Work with outside counsel as needed. Contribute to legal and technical interaction with our trade association, and provide counsel for development and tracking of our internal and external regulations, statutes and policy matters. Provide legal advice and counsel to EHS organization with respect to all aspects of stationary environmental issues.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree with a strong academic background. 10+ years legal environmental experience; work experience at a law firm. Comprehensive understanding and experience in environmental and health and safety Law. Admitted or able to gain admission to practice law in Michigan. Preferred: Undergraduate degree in the physical sciences, engineering or other technical field, or similar knowledge obtained through employment. Have legal knowledge and depth of environmental, health and safety experience comparable with that of a partner at a major law firm. Able to put the legal issues in the context of the Company’s business and manage the issues amongst functions and regions. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to critical deadlines, take a leadership role in independently managing projects from beginning to end. Proven experience identifying and implementing creative solutions and to proactively identify developments in environmental and health and safety law, and develop practical real world solutions to address the impact of such developments on the Company’s business and risk allocation decisions. Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse cross functional teams. Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong sense of inclusion and teamwork. Experience in coaching at leading others. Demonstrates the highest integrity, excellent judgment, transparency, and putting client needs first.
