Senior Policy Associate Duties: Work with the organization’s Policy Unit. Will help to develop legislative priorities, draft and track legislation, and liaison with law and policy makers and with other advocacy groups. Reporting to the Policy Director, the Senior Policy Associate will: Work with organization’s program staff to identify and develop legislative priorities and formulate strategies to advance these priorities. Monitor, analyze, draft, and track legislation and budget initiatives that impact organization’s clients. Keep organization’s leadership and staff apprised of bill activity and amendments. Draft presentations, policy recommendations, issue papers and reports. Build, maintain and participate in coalition with other child welfare advocacy groups related to policy reforms of mutual interest. Provide technical assistance and information to elected officials, providers, agency staff and other key child welfare stakeholders about the organization’s programs and initiatives. Prepare briefings, legislative memos, testimony and correspondence for the organization’s Board and leadership. Participate in periodic strategic planning. Provide written and oral testimony before various legislative and administrative bodies. Represent the organization at meetings, forums, workgroups and conferences. Strengthen and deepen connections with existing organization’s partners. Collaborate with the communications and other program staff to generate materials and presentations for outreach to the media, policymakers, and key stakeholders.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Master’s or JD Degree with strong academic credentials. Knowledge of the child welfare system and policies is beneficial. 4+ years of directly related to public policy or legislative advocacy. Thorough knowledge of legislative process and procedures. Strong problem solving skills and ability to think strategically. Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, professional, and motivating manner. Able to adjust to changing circumstances and priorities. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Some travel required.
