Immigration Project Attorney Responsibilities: Provide some direct representation and increase and improve the statewide capacity for appropriate advocacy services and competent legal representation in immigration and family law proceedings for immigrant survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, stalking, and sex trafficking across Kansas. Collaborate with immigration and family law attorneys in Kansas to improve the capacity for legal representation of immigrant survivors. Supervise and provide legal consultation and support to the Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representative (known as organization’s Special Immigrant Legal Advocate) in providing legal services to immigrant survivors. Collaborate with the Outreach Advocacy Coordinator and other organization’s staff on projects related to cultural competency, language access, legal services, and the provision of technical assistance. Provide legal technical assistance, research, and case consultation to attorneys on issues impacting survivors in family law and immigration proceedings. Provide direct legal services to survivors of sexual and domestic violence, sex trafficking and stalking on VAWA self-petitions, U visas, T visas, battered spouse waivers, adjustments of status, petitions for work authorization, and other immigration and family law remedies related to domestic and sexual violence. Develop curricula for and facilitate trainings for family law and immigration attorneys on effective and ethical representation of survivors, immigration remedies, and family law considerations. Serve as faculty on all relevant organization’s trainings. Provide training and technical assistance to attorneys, advocates, and allied professionals on issues impacting immigrant survivors and their children. Assist with other organization’s duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: Juris doctorate and admission to Kansas and Federal Bar. Knowledge of immigration law. Knowledge of legal and systems issues involved in domestic violence and sexual assault, especially as relates to immigration law. Previous background in domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy. Proven writing and speaking ability. Fluency in Spanish required. Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Ability to travel and have means of own transportation.
