Expert Counsel Duties: Responsible for an extensive and varied U.S. employment practice, and interacts regularly with C-level executives. Manage one junior employment lawyer and will have additional professional support. Will be responsible for assisting the General Counsel and Human Resources department (including all levels of Human Resources business partners and the Chief Human Resources Officer) to ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations. Will serve as the key legal advisor on all significant employee relations matters and employee investigations. Will train, advise, and update policies and practices regarding all employment law matters, including: anti-discrimination/harassment, affirmative action, compensation (including wage/hour), third-party staffing vendor contracts, leaves of absences, investigations, discipline and terminations, layoffs, and hiring. Will work to minimize legal exposure by proactively reviewing existing practices and employment related forms or policies and by making recommendations while considering business objectives and practicalities. Will handle pre-litigation claims, settlement negotiations, federal and state litigation, and administrative proceedings involving employment law matters, including management of outside counsel where support is needed.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A JD Degree from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials Bar Admission in California preferred. 10-15 years of employment experience as an attorney In-house experience strongly preferred. Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets preferred Broad and deep employment law knowledge; ability to readily advise on the wide variety of employment law issues that arise in a corporate environment; Strong analytical skills; Strong oral and written communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills; Strong partnering and consultant skills (clients seek you out for your wise and practical guidance); Ability to work independently, make good judgments, and take ownership of issues and matters through to their successful conclusion; Leadership and organization skills, including planning, prioritization and time management; Preference to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; Demonstrated integrity and ability to foster a compliance culture.
