Profile

Assistant City Attorney I or II Duties: Protect the legal interests of the City and to provide legal representation and advice to City officials, employees and departments. Responsible for reviewing legal matters, providing appropriate counsel, and initiating or responding to legal actions. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Will involve matters related to the City's real estate, planning and land use, and economic development practices. Will involve providing advice and representation related to finance, local taxation, and procurement matters. Will also provide advice and representation to other City agencies and perform other assignments, as needed.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Requires a JD degree and satisfaction of continuing legal education requirements of the Virginia State Bar. Must be a member of the Virginia State Bar. 4 years of experience is preferred. Requires a license to practice law from the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, independent admission to the bars of individual courts as necessary (e.g., United States District Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, etc.) and annual certification of satisfaction of continuing legal education requirements of the Virginia State Bar. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
