Entertainment Counsel Duties: Provide day-to-day and strategic legal and business support to Mattel’s entertainment groups. Counseling will be business-oriented, interdisciplinary, and front-ended. Primary deal responsibility includes worldwide production and distribution agreements and all related agreements, clearance, and pre-litigation dispute resolution. This position may evolve over time as Mattel’s business and legal needs evolve and eventually include Legal & Business Affairs deal support beyond traditional entertainment work – such as consumer products, themed entertainment, new media, ad agency, and marketing work.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: An undergraduate degree, and strong academic performance at a J.D. from a highly-rated law school. 4+ years as an entertainment attorney at a law firm and at a company with sophisticated entertainment practices. Experience in:negotiating and documenting sophisticated entertainment transactions, including those related to production and distribution of motion picture, tv, direct-to-video, video-on-demand, animation, and music content (including above-the-line talent agreements; music recording, licensing, and publishing agreements; and broadcast licenses), substantive knowledge of guild, copyright, ASCAP/BMI, and Canadian production issues, and entertainment, video game, and social media content and transactions (including digital distribution technologies, channels, and business models; e-commerce; content clearance; user generated content; and privacy (with knowledge of COPPA and CARU a plus)). The ability to provide first-rate, proactive, strategic legal and business advice. Skilled at identifying issues early, and then creatively solving them. A team player who can multi-task and work well under pressure, with constantly changing priorities and sometimes conflicting objectives. Strong drafting, managerial, and organizational skills. Maintain a professional demeanor, in writing and in person, with support staff, management, and outside counsel. A sense of humor is a plus.
