Associate General Counsel - Employment and Labor Law The candidate provides legal advice and counsel to the HR professionals and other business partners throughout the United States regarding labor and employment matters that impact the business. Drafts pleadings, correspondence, administrative responses, contracts and other documents relating to labor and employment and provides in-person representation of the company in hearings, mediations, arbitrations and negotiations. Supervises, manages, and evaluates outside counsel as appropriate. Supervises and/or provides direction to administrative, paralegal, and other support staff. Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility, and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Organization of and communication of employment matters to include notification to insurance company, to managers, and other persons necessary to include of new matters and on-going developments in those employment matters. Participates in and influences the decision-making process with appropriate clients and stakeholders. Preparation of pleadings in civil matters and responses to charges and requests for information in administrative matters. Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area or advises accordingly. Independently handles legal matters or projects ranging from basic to complex. Representation of company in mediations, arbitrations, and trials. Participates in training of associates and management with regard to employment-related issues. Prepares correspondence and answers to employment issues from associates and attorneys. Recognizes when the advice of more senior counsel or outside counsel is appropriate. Under the supervision of a more senior counsel, handles or participates in the handling of complex legal matters or projects, including managing outside counsel on employment related litigation. Ensures that appropriate clients and stakeholders are involved in the decision-making process. Works closely with Human Resources department to develop training and on-going compliance with employment matters. Educates clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures. Develops policies and procedures within a defined practice area and/or specific geographic area. The candidate should have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school. Must have an active license to practice law in the State of Tennessee or be able to be admitted to the State of Tennessee by reciprocity. Must have 6-10 years of experience of labor and employment law in a large law firm setting. Should have significant experience in counseling clients on labor and employment matters. Mediation, Arbitration, and Litigation experience highly desirable. In-house corporate experience is a plus. Should have a strong background in handling labor and employment matters before federal courts, state courts and administrative agencies.
