Labor and Employment Attorney Responsibilities: Will work within the Legal Department. Will be responsible for interacting closely with managers at the company’s many geographically dispersed operating locations and senior/executive leadership providing them with prompt, accurate, and ongoing legal advice on a wide range of labor and employment matters including discipline cases, grievances and arbitrations, company and related litigation (ULPs, Complaints, Sections 301 and 303 actions); and case management, performing legal work on other administrative and regulatory matters (such as wage and hour, EEO, etc.). Will be responsible for Providing day-to-day advice and counsel to corporate and operating location managers throughout North America concerning issues that arise regarding the interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements including discipline, implementation of policies and procedures, workplace investigations and discipline decisions. Representing the Company in arbitrations, preparing cases including witness preparation, legal research of precedents, preparation of post hearing briefs and other documents. Advising managers regarding compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment laws; representing Company in connection with union charges, complaints, or investigations by various administrative agencies, especially the company. Providing legal guidance to Company and operating location managers during union organizing efforts and when petitions are filed. Handling and/or monitoring labor related litigation in courts and managing outside legal counsel on labor matters when required. Performing other tasks as assigned from time to time by the Assistant General Counsel or General Counsel, for example, providing advice and counsel to non-attorney labor negotiators on collective bargaining law and strategy, assisting with strike contingency planning, etc.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification Requirements: A J.D. degree from ABA accredited law school and membership in a State Bar or Association. 7+ years of substantive labor and employment experience with a law firm, in-house legal department, or governmental agency. Knowledge of negotiation strategies and principals of labor contract implementation Litigation experience, including trials and arbitrations. Significant knowledge of relevant US federal and state employment law and labor relations legislation. Knowledge of Canadian Labor Law a plus. Committed to providing excellent customer service to both internal and external clients. Strong decision-making abilities, communication, dispute resolution and negotiation skills. Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Strong working knowledge of MS Office Software (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint). Ability to preserve confidentiality of information. Ability to organize and prioritize a large volume of concurrent tasks. Ability to work within strict timeframes and resolute deadlines. Willingness to travel may be required.
