Profile

Director, Academic and Educational Support Programs Duties: Managing and implementing the processes and workflow related to monitoring undergraduates’ academic progress (e.g., academic review) and requests for exceptions to university policy (e.g., petitions), both internally within UAR/VPUE and externally across the university. Responsible for the development of programs which provide academic support for specialized student populations (students returning from leave or suspension, transfers, coterminal students) and undergraduates in general, and shares in the guidance, training and oversight for the work of all UAR Advisors and administrative staff on matters related to academic progress and university policy. Serves as the primary liaison to the Office of the University Registrar, Student Services Center, and staff in all academic departments for issues of academic policy affecting undergraduates, and collaborates with relevant partners to maintain and enhance systems that advance and impact academic records. Supervises a team of full-time academic advisors, staff, and part-time advisors, and has a related budget. Serve as a member of the UAR management team using expert knowledge of university policy, academic advising, and undergraduate education. Interpret, apply, and ensure the implementation of university policy and practices related to academics by UAR advisors and VPUE at large; oversee and assist in the design and management of processes and projects, particularly those related to academic progress and academic policy. Assist in the development and use of technology to maintain documents and track data. Gather data and prepare reports on student populations, to assess and manage effectiveness of UAR advising efforts in general and with respect to academic progress. Direct the work of other employees through direct and indirect supervision; develop, implement, and provide training to UAR advisors and staff, and university staff, on academic advising theories, strategies, and initiatives with emphases on specialized student populations. Develop, implement, and provide one-on-one, group, electronic, and general academic advising to undergraduates, with specific attention to specialized and at-risk student populations, to assist them in appropriate decision-making on a range of issues including but not limited to: intellectual opportunities, academic progress, academic policies, academic skills/support, etc. Lead university wide teams and projects and provide outreach and consulting as a subject matter expert to internal and external organizations. Resolve substantial issues which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and expert professional knowledge. Manage financial processes and development of budgets.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience; advanced degree (e.g., M.A., M.S., J.D., PhD.) preferred. Experience in academic advising within a complex university environment, with sensitivity to diverse student populations, and knowledge/understanding of the intellectual and social development of college students preferred. Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management. Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information. Advanced computer skills/expertise, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Understanding of financial transactions and budget experience preferred. Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
