Manager of Faculty Research and Scholarly Support The candidate under the general direction of the Executive Director, manages the work of the Faculty Research and Scholarly Support unit, which includes Faculty Research and Information Delivery Assistance (FRIDA), Open Access Initiatives, Scholarly Communications, and Research Assistants for Hire. Develops, implements, and maintains systems and workflows that maximize prompt delivery of information resources to the community. Supervises the coordination of broad functional and complex operations within the FRIDA unit and between the Law School Library and other Harvard University Library units to encourage a cooperative approach to inter library loan/document delivery services that employ emerging electronic request and delivery technologies in a standards-based networked environment. Works with other members of the unit, library, and university to support faculty digital scholarship initiatives. Provides oversight for the Faculty Research and Scholarship Support unit. Manages the day-to-day activities of the FRIDA service and advises the Faculty Services Librarian and the Librarian for Open Access and Scholarly Communications in the execution of their responsibilities. Works in a research and development mode to manage both short-term and long-range strategies for FRIDA to acquire and deliver documents for patrons quickly and cost-effectively. Hires and evaluates staff, monitors scheduling and workflow, encourages staff development including one-on-one direct training, and advocating other staff development initiatives outside department. Develops strong working relationships with faculty liaisons and reference librarians to assess patron needs and market to these patrons any developments in FRIDA. Builds strong relationships with faculty assistants and develops clear knowledge of Faculty research needs and preferences. Authorizes and assists in monitoring all expenditures for both Bloomberg and Pacer budgets, and is the first-line decision maker regarding the use of these funds. Develops and maintains a comprehensive, flexible and manageable electronic statistical data gathering system for all operations that can be used for a variety of library decisions related to resource allocation, collection development and user support. Works closely with managers of other units in the Library to develop cross-unit workflows and coordinate shared functions. Participates in organization Library, University and professional programs as appropriate to enhance work-related and professional skills. Participates in the research teaching component of the Harvard Law School Legal Research and Writing program. Contributions from other library staff in other library units, and assesses such contribution; may contribute 20% time to other functional areas of the Library. May serve on committees. Stay abreast of ongoing developments in the profession.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. ABA accredited J.D. highly preferred, or 3-4 years’ experience working in Reference as an Academic Law Librarian is desired. Should have 2-4 years’ experience in an academic law library, government, or commercial environment in the movement of information resources in a networked environment. Must have knowledge of electronic library applications, including online database searching with expert knowledge of LexisNexis, Westlaw, Pacer, and Hein Online and other major vendor supported applications for ILL/DD services including ILLiad. Must have familiarity with current issues related to the use of intellectual property in the networked environment. Should have demonstrated experience with web authoring and editing and familiarity with digital scanning technologies. Working knowledge of standard PC office applications, e.g. Microsoft Office are needed. Must have well-developed oral and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
