Profile

Associate Dean and Dean of Students Duties: Assists with personal matters, and supports and coordinates a range of extracurricular activities, from moot court competitions to student journals to student organizations and residence life, as well as a variety of all-school activities, including orientation, graduation, wellness programming, conferences, programming on relevant topics, and other events which serve to entertain, educate, and cultivate community. Enriches the student experience and enhances the academic mission by fostering personal development in a professional environment, and by providing easy access to services and resources. Serves in one most visible roles and is the primary advocate for the school’s students within the administration and University. Counsels students on academic, career, character and fitness, and personal matters, ensures compliance with university policies and applicable laws, and serves as deputy Title IX coordinator. Reporting to the Dean, will manage a $3.2 million budget, a staff of 13, and more than 60 student employees.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and J.D. Degree, with strong academic credentials that will be credible to HLS stakeholders; 10 years of progressively-responsible, relevant experience, including substantial management experience. Ability to successfully manage and work effectively within a complex organization; strong preference for several years of experience in student services within a complex higher education environment, though other professional backgrounds will be considered; well-developed understanding of legal education, student affairs best practices and trends related to student development, and a proven commitment to fostering student success and satisfaction; demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and track record of advocacy regarding student-related issues in the context of legal education, including wellness and mental health; able to counsel students on a variety of academic, personal, and emotional issues, including students in distress; resolute commitment to and experience advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives, ideally including having participated in the establishment of new programs; sensitivity to and knowledge of the needs of a diverse community, and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds; competency regarding issues that impact diverse populations, including matters of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, parental status, veteran status, and gender identity/expression, as well as intersectionality; demonstrated ability to handle crisis situations and crisis communications with aplomb; able to work both collaboratively and independently, with a creative approach to problem solving and demonstrated success in dealing appropriately and effectively with individuals at all levels of an institution; excellent management and administrative skills, including financial acumen, and a proven ability to lead and mentor staff across disparate functional areas.
