Director of IRB Administration–Committee on the Use of Human Subjects Duties: Reporting to the FAS Associate Dean for Research Administration, will be responsible for leadership of the human subjects research protection program and oversight of human subject studies conducted at Harvard University area schools (FAS, HKS, HBS, SEAS, and HLS). Responsible for developing and implementing policies, procedures and training programs to ensure the ethical conduct of research and compliance with applicable federal regulations, state laws, and institutional policies governing human subject research. Reviews and approves research protocols involving human subjects. Reviews adverse events and reports of noncompliance to determine appropriate resolutions and responses. Leads accreditation processes, maintains a Quality Improvement Program (QIP), and educational initiatives for the University area research community. Works with institutional officials, regulatory agencies, investigators and research staff, other University administrative offices, and various other public constituencies.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Required. 6+ years of IRB experience, including IRB processes and academic research management experience in complex or regulatory environment –OR- three years of experience with IRB processes and three years of academic research management experience in complex or regulatory environment. Leadership experience in an academic setting. Knowldege of federal and state laws and regulations governing human subject research. Experience with accreditation. Advanced degree in science, social science, law, or other relevant discipline; PhD or JD preferred. Experience as IRB member. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, experience in policy development, an ability to analyze complex scientific and ethical issues, practice working in multi-cultural settings and handling confidential matters. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public speaking. Leadership experience in an academic setting and an ability to analyze complex scientific and ethical issues involving human subjects. Must have a proven record of effectively influencing multiple stakeholders and producing tangible results.
