Executive Director, External Education Duties: Reporting to the Dean for External Education, the Executive Director is the key advisor and partner of the Dean for External Education in developing, implementing and realizing his strategic priorities. Working closely with the entire External Education academic leadership team, will establish opportunity review processes, performance metrics and help hone business models for new initiatives to ensure the realization of both individual unit and global external education strategic goals. Will assist the academic leadership team in delivering existing external education programming and products to meet educational impact, faculty development and financial objectives. Will determine key market and partner relationships, and expand on existing client relationships and collaborations, with a global perspective. Will work closely with the senior academic and administrative leaders of each External Education unit --- Global and Continuing Education, Executive Education, Office for Online Learning (HMX) and Harvard Health Publications --- to ensure the alignment of all areas of the organization, including marketing, corporate relations, technology enhanced learning, finance, human resources and program delivery functions. Will support the annual budget and multi-year processes, working closely with the financial team to ensure transparent and accurate financial accounting. Will manage opportunity review and implementation to assess revenue opportunities, risk, investment strategy and obstacles. Will be the principle liaison to, and work closely with, relevant stakeholders in central administration, HR, finance, legal and information technology, and secure necessary approvals from each, as appropriate, for new project implementation. Will carry forward existing and new project goals to completion.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: MBA, PhD, JD or MD with 10+ years of experience in administration and leadership. Administrative experience at a large academic institution strongly preferred. Significant experience and working knowledge of the philosophy, policies, operations and realities of academic medical centers, including significant managerial, compliance and fiscal experience. Superior interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with budgetary responsibility and authority and a seasoned team builder. Skill and creativity in leading through transition. Strong drafting skills. Energized by multi-dimensional problems and ability to problem solve through creation of teams. Thrives in a dynamic environment, with a proven ability to make meaningful progress in the absence of complete information. Has strong experience with, or knowledge of, the working environment within higher education, life sciences and clinical medicine. Prior experience within online education is strongly preferred. Must understand and be able to reconcile the inevitable tensions that arise between competing entrepreneurial agenda and values and pace of academia and ensure the maintenance and elevation of the HMS brand remains an utmost priority. Effectively identifies and actively works to resolve conflicts between individuals and groups. Must be an experienced leader in business and strategy with a strong interest in, and loyalty to, the academic mission of Harvard Medical School. Should have experience working with entrepreneurial business opportunities and bring a proven organizational, interpersonal and consultative skills to the position. Must be self-motivated, feel confident articulating the mission of External Education, internally and externally, and get satisfaction from being an integral part of a tight-knit, entrepreneurial team.
