Director of Risk Management Duties: Provides leadership for risk management and compliance functions. Reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer and working with the President and other senior administrative staff, will serve as an internal resource and coordinate institutional compliance and risk management activities. Will oversee insurance management, contract review, claims management, and general compliance with higher education laws and regulations. Coordinate the development and implementation of long-term goals, policies and procedures for the College’s risk management and compliance programs. Work with the Colby community on a broad range of compliance, legal and risk management initiatives. Manage the College’s insurance programs, budget, brokers, and consultants. Coordinate all aspects of Colby’s general insurance coverages, including but not limited to commercial liability, property and casualty, educators’ legal liability, student health insurance, and fine arts. Manage insurance claims on behalf of the College. Serve as an internal consultant to senior staff and other administrative colleagues on a broad range of risk management and compliance matters. Coordinate use of legal services, working with the senior staff to assess needs, assign work, and manage work product delivery. Review and authorize a variety of proposed contracts to ensure equitable terms for Colby; negotiate modifications as appropriate. Review and negotiate, as appropriate, construction contracts, working with the Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Planning. Monitor legal and compliance developments for applicability to Colby and work with senior staff, outside counsel, and others to craft policies and procedures to ensure compliance. Coordinate and conduct periodic internal reviews to assess compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Coordinate with outside counsel as necessary to provide legal advice on a wide variety of issues and participate in evaluating and developing College policy related to legal, compliance and risk management matters. Coordinate response to governmental inquiries and investigations as the College’s primary internal point of contact. Work with Human Resources, legal counsel, and insurance carriers to facilitate educational and training programs on risk management for faculty and staff. Maintain and coordinate adherence to the College’s document retention policies. Participate in emergency planning and response efforts. Work with Human Resources to provide assistance, information, and referrals to employees on sensitive work and personal issues.
Qualification and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree with 6+ years of experience in relevant setting. Higher education experience preferred. JD Degree; licensure to practice in Maine preferred. Excellent customer service skills required. Demonstrated program leadership and interpersonal skills. Ability to build relationships with a broad range of constituencies. Ability to work independently and collaborative in an institutional environment. Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects, and highly productive work ethic. Ability to oversee and maintain highly confidential information. Ability to manage and coordinate contracted resources. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills and the capacity to organize information. Demonstrated reputation for integrity. Appropriate sense of urgency.
