Equity Officer Duties: Under administrative direction, assists University in achieving its goal of providing an open, diverse and inclusive learning, living and working environment by investigating complaints of discrimination and harassment by and against faculty, staff and students; ensures compliance with University policies, and federal, state and local equal opportunity employment and education laws; develops and facilitates institution-wide training programs and activities related to non-discrimination and harassment laws and policies (e. g. , Title I, Title VII, Title IX); serves in the capacity as a Title IX Deputy Coordinator; assists with the development, review and distribution of the University’s Affirmative Action Plan. Plays a lead role in coordinating and executing timely and thorough investigations of complaints of discrimination, harassment, or bias filed by or against faculty, staff, and students; prepares written investigation reports summarizing the findings and results of such investigations; ensures complaints are logged, processed, and investigated in accordance with University policy and procedures. Advises faculty, staff and students of their rights under federal law and University policy regarding nondiscrimination and harassment (e. g. , Title VII, ADA, ADEA, EPA, GINA, etc. ). Develops and facilitates institution-wide training and education programs on topics and issues that fall under the purview of the OIED (this is specifically applicable to employment laws and regulations, but may also include Title IX and other applicable education laws). Serves in the capacity as a Deputy Coordinator and secondary investigator to assist the University in its obligations under Title IX. Reviews University policies and procedures to ensure nondiscrimination and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Works with the Human Resources department to ensure policies and practices protect the rights of employees and applicants. Assists in the development, review and implementation of the Affirmative Action plan, including assisting with audit document responses. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree required; supplemented with experience in the investigation and evaluation of discrimination and harassment complaints. Experience in higher education and/or a campus setting working with and training faculty, staff, and students is highly desirable. Student conduct experience preferred. Knowledge of complexities surrounding sexual assault, sexual harassment, and intimate partner violence cases in a college setting, including experience conducting investigations in a sensitive and confidential manner, is beneficial. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret federal, local and state equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws and regulations is required; working knowledge of Title IX and Affirmative Action compliance is preferred. Ability to conduct investigation interviews using proactive listening skills and thorough questioning techniques is essential. Ability to advise and counsel effectively. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent and mature judgment, maintain objectivity, and safeguard confidential and sensitive information. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to understand the needs of the university and to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community partners. Effective project management, organizational and analytical skills. Strong presentation and facilitation skills. Must have a sense of urgency in approaching responsibilities. Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills and ability to foster positive interactions with diverse constituencies. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Ability to operate personal computer and various software programs.
