Associate Vice Provost For Research Administration - Office of the Vice Provost for Research Duties: Responsible for overseeing the Offices of Research Administration, Technology Licensing and Industry Collaboration, and Proposal Development, programs for the use of animals in research and teaching, the protection of human subjects in research, and the use of infectious agents and recombinant DNA on all three campuses (Boston, Grafton, and Medford), and the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine on the Boston and Medford/Somerville campus and implementation of the university’s policies on scientific integrity, conflict of interest in research, and other areas that support research. Assures that the services and resources provided by the units under its direction meet the needs of the research community and, in cooperation with the Vice President for Finance, satisfies the requirements of laws and regulations that govern research, and protecting the University’s interests. Policy development, strategic planning, and oversight. Work with school deans and other administrative offices to assure that the resources are available, systems are in place, and the environment is conducive to research. Work with the research leadership of University’s schools and university Medical Center to promote cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of resources and to maintain a positive working relationship between the schools and with the hospital. Maintains close working relationships with faculty and department chairs in order to keep abreast of the needs and direction of research and to foster an environment of open communication and responsiveness. Responsible for addressing the processes, systems, compliance, and education needs for both central and departmental research administration functions. Provides operational management and oversight for each of the core central research administrative units. Focused and defined leadership of these functions provides for a more seamless and compliant approach to managing research administration. Management responsibilities for these units involve the development of a comprehensive research administration strategy that includes: Client service, Strategic planning, Work process review and enhancement, Development of information systems to support business processes, Human resources, budget and finance, and infrastructure. Ensure that all operations are in compliance with regulations, policies, and laws that govern externally sponsored research activities in addition to addressing the needs of ever-growing research volumes, and that these activities are conducted in a manner that effectively meets federal guidelines and the support needs of the University research community. Will develop operational models that are in accord with the spirit of regulatory policies and aligned with the University risk tolerance level. Will coordinate in concert with campus departments and research units with a view of ensuring a stronger and more integrated campus research program, which meets the needs of all its constituents. Devise metrics and criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of these compliance activities to meet stated campus goals. Working in conjunction with appropriate internal faculty, staff, researchers, and advisory bodies, will be responsible for the development of new policies and procedures and campus guidelines that impact the research enterprise. Participates in a number of campus committees and in areas that pertain to research and general campus administration. Be a member of the following high-level campus committees: Ex-officio of OVPR Faculty Advisory Committee, the Administrative Council, and the Research and Graduate Program Council.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: MA, MBA, MPA, J.D., / PhD or equivalent with 10+ years of applicable experience or Bachelor's Degree and combination of related education and experience. Substantial work experience in a doctoral-extensive research University setting with exposure to many different areas of University administration. Understanding of the process of research and the needs of researchers; thorough knowledge and understanding of the requirements for regulatory compliance related to human subjects, laboratory animals, scientific misconduct, conflict of interest and federally funded research; understanding of the legal, financial, and social aspects of technology transfer, intellectual property protection, management and licensing; experience in applying for and managing grants; knowledge of policy, practice, and organization of federal funding agencies; understanding of University issues in a broader context; ability to understand University and school budgets and financial implications of decisions; ability to lead and manage people, mediate disputes and communicate effectively with faculty, administration and staff; ability to exercise good judgment, to negotiate successfully, to solve problems, to plan strategically and to make decisions in a fast paced environment where the consequences of decisions can have a large impact.
