Director, Business and Legal Affairs Responsibilities: Oversee the day-to-day business and legal affairs concerning a wide array of media, music and entertainment issues across filmed entertainment properties. Negotiate, draft, review and analyze an extensive range of music and media agreements, including talent agreements, producer agreements, soundtrack distribution agreements, songwriter and co-publishing agreements. Advise client groups (including marketing, home entertainment, franchise management, consumer products) regarding music rights and clearances for use of content on their platforms. Provide general advice and support concerning music rights and music-related legal issues to the business. Advise clients regarding union compliance, and performing rights concerns. Maintain the integrity of business practices and policies.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Member of the California State Bar or registered with the California bar as in-house counsel. 7+ years of experience, with 5+ years in music-specific legal work, preferably in a music business affairs, rights and clearances, or licensing capacity with experience in label relations, publishing, union agreements, or a related field specific to the Music Industry preferred. Prior experience managing and training staff is highly preferred. A strong background in the area of copyright law (US and foreign) and intellectual property matters. Excellent negotiating, drafting and analytical skills. Thorough understanding of licensing agreements, including terms, and ability to identify issues during contract review. High level of professional communication etiquette with ability to effectively interact with clients. Self-reliant and highly organized, with the ability to pay high attention to detail. Self-starter with the ability to handle high volume of licenses with accurate execution. Ability to read, extract and input critical data. Willingness to take ownership of projects and exercise responsibility, and open to new challenges. Ability to respond quickly and effectively to client concerns, questions and issues. Have a problem-solving approach. Be self-motivated and have a very strong work ethic. Strategic negotiation skills. Must be able to handle multiple tasks. Good business judgment and strong business ethics. Excellent interpersonal skills, and a collaborative style with ability to establish effective relationships of the organization. Creativity and responsiveness to challenges requiring informed and timely decisions in a fast-paced environment, deadline intensive environment. Should have a firm grasp of the technology and industry-standard tools of the trade (RapidCue, iTunes, working with digital media files, etc.).
