ProfileLegal Counsel Upstream - Deep Water The candidate will provide legal support, as part of a Legal team, to all aspects of company’s Gulf of Mexico Deep Water business, with a primary focus on assets in the development and production through abandonment phases, although the scope also entails providing support to assets in the exploration and appraisal phases. Provide legal advice and support to company Offshore Inc.’s Gulf of Mexico development and operating assets. Scope includes working with more experienced members of the LSUP/w team to provide advice and support on a wide variety of issues, including joint venture arrangements, operating arrangements, production handling, midstream (i.e., export, gathering, transportation and processing) and other commercial arrangements, unitization, regulatory and permitting matters, royalty issues, logistics, abandonment, incident response preparedness, and safety and asset integrity matters. As experience is acquired, this role will entail legal focal point responsibility for a variety of Gulf of Mexico operating assets. Identify and prioritize legal risks and alternative strategies in a variety of fields. Ensure documents accurately reflect commercial decisions, at all times consistent with legal obligations and the company Control Framework. Represent company vis-à-vis third parties. Instruct and manage external counsel (NOTE: very limited use of outside counsel, reserved for specialty matters). Assist in supervision of support staff. Ability to work as part of a team and with both internal and external stakeholders with diverse cultural backgrounds Should have law degree and professional legal qualification. Must have 3 years of experience, preferably in a business legal advisory role, with significant experience in drafting, negotiating and advising on complex commercial arrangements and/or joint ventures. Experience advising in respect of a regulatory framework is a plus. Must have strong commercial, transactional and client advisory skills, which can be readily applied to advising on offshore Upstream and Midstream matters. Ability: Ability to quickly grasp complex commercial arrangements. Demonstrated capability to build knowledge in particular areas of law, with the ability to quickly identify critical legal risks. Ability to work in a dynamic legal environment with clients who need to quickly respond to operational and regulatory demands. Ability to work with more experienced or senior practitioners, take advice and coaching into account in the delivery of services. Demonstrable record as a self-starter, yet comfortable to escalate issues and seek support, including in connection with defining difficult positions and achieving a balance with commercial considerations (e.g., advising the business on the immediate and longer term impacts of different legal courses of action). Ability to handle sensitive government and joint venture co-owner relations. Ability to prioritize time spent on particular matters by value and risk. Global mindset and ability to work virtually with lawyers in other regions.
