Director, Strategic Transactions The candidate will drive firm's Strategic Alliances (SA) deal structure design and negotiations, including licensing, acquisition and venture equity transactions, by understanding and employing deal structures and terms that create mutually beneficial agreements. Will be responsible for deals spanning all disease areas and technologies, from early-stage discovery through clinical proof-of-concept. A distinguished deal-making track record and outstanding communication and negotiation skills are required. Work closely with the Search and Evaluation Team members to understand promising scientific opportunities, advance potential partnering discussions, and structure transactions to maximize scientific and strategic value. Lead the structuring and successful negotiations of such deals, tapping both into own prior experience and the expertise existing within firm's and larger Novartis. Working with a cross-functional team, the Associate Director/Director, Strategic Transactions may serve in either a lead role or a supporting role to execute the transaction. Leading the design and negotiations of deals.Assembling and leading cross-functional and cross-divisional teams that include representation from multiple functional areas, including research, development, manufacturing, safety, regulatory, commercial, legal, patents and finance. Presenting transactions to executive management for approval, including strategic rationale, deal structure, valuation and risks. Interfacing and liaising with counterpart business development and licensing groups within Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Driving internal consensus on potential opportunities in collaboration with colleagues on the Search and Evaluation team in advance of before discussions proceed to management-supported negotiations.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a scientific discipline) plus advanced degree M.S., Ph.D., M.D., J.D. and/or M.B.A.. Must have 5+ years track record of designing and negotiating business development transactions of import within the therapeutic life sciences industry. Demonstrated experience in closing sophisticated, significant, high-quality transactions is required. In-depth knowledge of the life sciences industry and the role and dynamic of corporate and business development is essential.
