Corporate Counsel, Labor and Employment Duties: Support and assist Associate General Counsel, Labor, Employment and Litigation, in providing labor and employment advice and support to U.S. and Canada Human Resources function of a global healthcare, life science, and performance materials business with approximately 10,000 U.S. employees in approximately 20 employing legal entities. Assist with and support labor and employment initiatives and projects. Serve as primary point of contact and legal business partner for the EMD Serono, Inc. (healthcare) Human Resources Business Partner teams, as well as for one or more additional areas of responsibility (which may include the life science and/or performance materials businesses), as assigned by manager. Coordinate with EMD Serono, Inc. General Counsel and legal team (and life science and performance materials legal teams) on labor and employment matters, as needed and as directed by manager. Direct responsibility for day-to-day management and coordination of docket of U.S. and Canadian employment disputes and litigation, including pre-litigation management, claims reporting, third party subpoenas, coordination with insurance manager for insured claims, and litigation and administrative action support (e.g., discovery, pre-trial and trial). Responsibility with respect to other U.S. (non-employment) litigation as needed, and for coordinating certain aspects of the companies’ internal claims management and reporting process. Monitor developments in U.S. labor and employment law, and brief/train U.S. Legal team and HR staff periodically. Provide counsel to and work closely with human resources on a broad range of labor employment matters for the U.S. and Canada, including compliance with U.S. federal and all state employment laws, employee disputes and litigation. Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree and 3-4+ years of full-time labor, employment, and benefits legal experience, preferably in a large law firm or company and with a focus on client counseling, required. Labor and employment legal experience in the healthcare and/or life science fields a plus.Additional large firm or in-house experience in general business, commercial, transactional, regulatory or litigation a plus. First class legal skills. Experience with human resources, labor, employment and/or benefits. Resilience, professionalism and ability to act under pressure. Ability to abstract and structure complex information and to find adequate and pragmatic solutions in discussions with a variety of stake-holders. Strong communication skills.Excellent language skills (English fluent).
