Profile

Business Manager Responsibilities: Participate in team responsible for developing strategic plan and identifying marketing and business development initiatives to support this plan. Oversee execution of all initiatives, ensuring each is completed on time and on budget. Work with practice group partners to identify client prospects, initiate cross-selling activities within the firm and follow up on initiatives. Track the progress of all ongoing business development efforts and initiatives. Together with Marketing & Business Development Department, develop client pitches/proposals for targeted markets; and develop opportunities for in-house presentations. Work with firm partners and Marketing & Business Development Department to develop and support opportunities for professional speaking, writing and expanding brand name awareness (e.g., ranking of practice group and its attorneys by organizations such as Chambers). Expand opportunities to increase brand awareness with outward facing activities such as ABA sponsored events, articles and publications. Together with Marketing & Business Development Department, assist in the development of collateral marketing materials and website content. Conduct financial analysis of group financial performance, provide regular financial reports to partners and make recommendations for appropriate actions to improve group performance. Assess and report monthly on key performance indicators to the Practice Group chair. Take primary role in developing the Practice Group’s budget for the year and, once approved by the firm, take responsibility for monitoring operational expenditures. Together with Pricing Department, participate with attorneys in the evaluation, development and monitoring of alternative fee arrangements, rate structures and project budgets. Oversee accounts receivable and unbilled time, providing regular reports to Practice Group Chair regarding aged AR and UBT and working with billing partners and Finance Department to ensure issues are promptly addressed. Work with the appropriate administrative department(s), to assist Practice Group Chair(s) on issues relating to client billings, invoices, collections and credit concerns. Collaborate with case teams in developing and tracking budgets, managing teams, and working with vendors, other partners and stakeholders in mitigating risk. Assess and report monthly on appropriate project progress metrics to the Practice Group chair, and collaborate to develop ideas for improvement. Coordinate lateral recruitment activities for the Practice Group. Assist with new attorney orientation and develop lateral integration plan for all lateral attorneys in the group. Maintain inventory of new matters, current workload and staffing assignments, and work with Group staffing partner regarding project staffing requirements. Assist with coordination of formal and informal attorney development curricula such as boot camps. Participate in attorney-focused initiatives geared towards utilization, skill development and profitability. Oversee development and maintenance of internal knowledge management system to catalog attorney work product, relevant legal opinions, presentations and business development materials. Develop agendas, attend, coordinate and assist in planning, and provide follow-up support to, Practice Group (and sub-group) meetings and retreats. Manage outside vendor relationships for Practice Group and/or individual projects within the Practice Group; develop group-wide vendor billing protocols to centralize function.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field required. J.D. or advanced degree preferred. 10+ years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience that included successful management of people, programs, finances/budgets and projects. Knowledge of standard accounting and/or budgeting principles and the ability to monitor and manage budgets within established limits, analyze financial data and draw accurate conclusions. Intermediate knowledge of MS suite to produce quality written communications such as memos, spreadsheets, slides, and other standard work documents.
