Profile

Head of China Development Duties: Provide significant practice and business development support to the firm's practices in the Shanghai office, including marketing, business development, knowledge management, financial analysis, lateral attorney integration, and attorney training. Support all partners in the office on matters such as lateral attorney recruiting and other regional and office-wide initiatives. Work closely with the partners on projects that include designing, organizing, coordinating and implementing initiatives in support of individual partners' business plans and the various practice group and firm strategic plans. Will be tasked with monitoring, tracking and updating strategic business and practice development initiatives, and contributing to the overall success of the Shanghai office. Will facilitate collaboration with colleagues across the firm’s Asia offices in an effort to achieve cross-region goals. Oversee and analyze market research and industry trends to support business priorities of individual partners, practices, office and firm. Design, coordinate and implement business development initiatives in furtherance of individual, office, practice and firm strategic business plans working closely with partners and other attorneys as well as practice and office development team members across the region and globally. Facilitate marketing initiatives, including pitches, responses to RFPs, teleconferences, webinars, external events and client training presentations. Identify and coordinate participation in various external marketing opportunities, including speaking opportunities, sponsorships, conferences, external events and writing opportunities. Supervise and review the preparation of, and in certain cases draft marketing collateral material (e.g., brochures, biographies, website description and practice overviews and experience lists). Prepare and/or supervise and review preparation of various legal ranking submissions. Assist Shanghai partners in development, execution and implementation of individual, office and practice strategic business plans. Assist partners with the preparation of lateral partner business cases and sponsor memoranda.Coordinate on-boarding and integration of lateral attorneys into the Shanghai office. Expand, enrich and maintain internal resources to support the attorneys, including intranet site ("the infoNet"), experience database, forms, samples and templates.Ensure training of new legal personnel in use of technology specific to practice groups. Update partners on developments of cross-practice group initiatives.Facilitate sharing of developments and information with appropriate professional services staff groups. Assist with the design, organization and implementation of practice group specific training programs in conjunction with practice group attorneys and firm’s professional development department. Lead analysis of office and practice group financial reports specific to the region and advise partners on trends impacting their individual practices and the region. Plan and execute internal practice group, office and partner meetings/events as needed. Coordinate with practice and development colleagues across Asia offices on Asia-wide strategy, plans and initiatives. Coordinate with practice and office development colleagues worldwide on firm-wide strategy, plans and initiatives.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree or M.B.A. a plus. 3-5 years experience working in a mid to large law firm or professional services organization, corporate environment, or internationally recognized legal periodical or directory/ranking institution, in a similar field and/or as a practicing attorney. Must have: experience working in a large law firm or a multinational professional services firm; a positive, can-do attitude; strong organizational and people management skills; attention to detail; and a willingness to pitch in and roll-up their sleeves to help the lawyers and the practices achieve their business objectives. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, have the ability to work and think independently, and be highly motivated. Must have proven problem-solving ability, be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and take responsibility for designing and implementing goals. Prior people management experience including coaching, mentoring and strong delegation skills preferred. Fluency in spoken and written English and Mandarin Chinese preferred. Excellent oral communication skills. Excellent legal and business writing skills.
