Venture Director Duties: Responsible for business development efforts in the Silicon Valley office and beyond, including planning, supporting and implementing a broad array of business development initiatives to help expand the Corporate & Securities-Technology practice. Identifying strategies to pursue relationships with quality emerging growth companies, venture capital firms, and investment banks in the sector, and continuously monitor the local markets for new business opportunities and trends; advising and coaching attorneys in the office with respect to client development opportunities in the emerging growth and venture capital sector; establishing relationships with CEO/CFO executives of quality emerging growth companies and with venture capital firms on behalf of the attorneys in the office; maintaining and building on our seminar series for emerging growth companies, angel, and venture capital investors and investment firms in the Bay area; advising emerging growth company clients on executive summaries and other written and oral presentations to potential venture investors; developing and maintaining a database of angel and venture capital firm contacts, and coordinating transmission of client pitch materials to investors; monitoring major M&A and IPO deal opportunities to assist attorneys in the office in pitching such opportunities, and draft presentations for such attorney pitches; maintaining and developing PR, Communications, and Business Development materials directed to Silicon Valley emerging growth companies and their investors, and adapting other firm materials for use; recommending and implementing strategies to leverage the firm's national and international emerging growth capabilities to clients and investors who wish to pursue investment and other business opportunities outside the region; coordinating client development efforts with community and industry groups in the emerging growth and venture investment sector; supporting office and firm-wide committees focused on emerging growth and venture investment work; developing emerging growth and venture capital co-marketing opportunities for attorneys in corporate, intellectual property, estates/trusts/tax planning, litigation, and other practice areas of the firm; providing quarterly recaps to management of local/regional new business development accomplishments, including details on venture funding of clients, referrals from investors, and other new matter generation resulting from programming efforts; and working directly with the Corporate & Securities-Technology practice section leader on creating annual budgets, and managing the budget throughout the year.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Must have a college degree (J.D. Degree, MBA, or other relevant advanced degree is preferred), 5-10 years of marketing/client development experience (1+ year of legal marketing experience is preferred), and experience with the venture capital industry and startup financing process. Should be a self-starter that can juggle numerous projects on tight timetables; have the ability to work independently to create opportunities and programs for the attorneys in the office; be able to draw conclusions, assess implications, and make recommendations most likely to build business; and have the ability to execute and evaluate all initiatives with minimal support. Excellent verbal and written communication, persuasion, and motivation skills are critical as are collegial, collaborative, and team player attributes.
